Old definition of Legalists: people who think they can earn salvation or are harsh or manipulative about Scripture.
New definition: people who talk about Christian responsibilities.
We're getting so used to decaf Christianity, that genuine faith is becoming unpopular, especially when we talk about Christian responsibility or self-denial.
Salvation is a gift – no good works can earn it (Ephesians 2:8), but living for Christ is not easy, and we shouldn't tell anyone it is.
1. Following Christ has a cost.
Luke 14:25-34
2. God has expectations of us
Ephesians 5
(one of many examples)
3. We can please, displease, grieve, anger, disappoint, and hurt our Lord.
Genesis 6:6
Ephesians 4:30
Isaiah 63:10
4. Following Christ requires self-denial and effort.
Matthew 10:37-38
Matthew 10:28
Romans 12:2
Colossians 1:9-10
Living for Christ isn't easy, but it's wonderful. He is the only One who can save us and the only One who can change us from the inside out!
1 Thessalonians 2:4-6
