Have We Forgotten How To Blush? Jer. 6:15

Jeremiah 6:15 says something very important about our ability to BLUSH. This 1-minute devotion explains.

I remember a time when I was in high school, attending a movie with some girlfriends. The movie was tame compared to today's standards, but I was glad the theater was dark so my teen-aged friends couldn't see my face turn red.
The content of the movie made me blush, and it probably made my girlfriends blush as well.

Unfortunately, no one blushes that easily anymore because our culture promotes and even celebrates sinful behavior.

This happened in Old Testament times as well, as Jeremiah 6:15 explains: "Are they ashamed of their disgusting actions? Not at all—they don’t even know how to blush!"

Ephesians 4:19 also describes this problem: "They have no sense of shame. They live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity."

When we entertain ourselves with movies, music, books, and TV shows that glorify illicit sex, death, crime, murder, torture, evil, nudity, and obscenity, we lose our ability to blush. If we're not careful, we can also lose our conscience.

Let's not let that happen, dear Christians. Let's refuse to grow comfortable with things that should make us blush.
"Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." Proverbs 4:23
Is it time to re-evaluate your entertainment standards?

  1. This post on "blushing" is so timely. I was watching a television program touted as positive drama just last night and found myself sickened by the blatant evil. Another program to eliminate! It's so easy to justify our viewing habits, especially when we become hardened to Satan's tactics. But when the Spirit nudges our heart, we need to listen and obey. Thanks for being true to the Word of God, Gail.

  2. You're so right, Dawn. I have to regularly evaluate what I watch on TV. It's so easy to let my standards slide.

  3. I know longer keep a tv in my home. I do watch Netflix on my laptop because I can easily pick and choose. One of the reasons I do this is also because evil things are not confined to television shows only but also to the commercials that we and our families are subjected to when watching regular tv. I was listening to an old time preacher the other day and he said something that struck me as so true. He said "entertainment is the devil's way to steal the believers joy."

  4. You're right about the commercials. There are previews for other shows, some with very immoral content as well as product advertising that appeals to greed or outward beauty.

  5. Gail. Very timely indeed! Every year my husband and I say, "It's about time to get rid of the television. The kids are getting older, and they're going to see these things." We think about guarding THEIR hearts, but maybe not ours. Humbling. I was praying about the timing of this yesterday--and then found this post today. Thank you for being the tool He used to humble me today.

    1. That's a good point, Deborah. There were many times when our children were growing up that I evaluated my habits because of the kind of example I wanted to set. But there is a more profound principle than merely our example...as you so aptly point out, we are not immune to harmful influences either! Thanks for your insights.

  6. I agree, and was just discussing this with a family member(Christian) who isnt as selective in television viewing, I do not watch shows that have nudity, violence, sex, language, etc. If it werent for Christian TV, I would not even have a TV, cept , my husband would not agree, he watches alot of car stuff, and I like the old shows, The Waltons, Little House on the Prairie,or HGTV. I have not gone to a movie in years.I just get sickened by the things I see on just the commercials, it is so evident that Satan in trying hard, so many shows dealing with occult, , vampires, etc. Terrible. Yes, we must guard our hearts,as the simple song we learned as children in church goes, Be Careful Little Ears What You Hear. etc.

  7. Much of the programs today, whether it's is TV and Movies. The purpose is to draw people away from God. This is under the authority of the New World Order. That is why I hardy watch TV or go to the movies.
