Eating Your Words

Matthew 15, what goes into your mouth, what comes out of your mouth

Americans are increasingly concerned about what we eat, as we should be. Unnatural and highly refined foods can cause serious health problems.

Unfortunately, we don't have similar concerns for our spiritual health. We're more concerned with what goes into our mouths than what comes out.

But Jesus said, “Listen and understand. What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them [because] the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart ” Matthew 15:10-11,18*

If our hearts are feeding on Christ and His Word, our speech should reflect this in words that are careful, thoughtful, truthful, kind and wise.

May we feed on Truth (John 17:14-17) and pray like the Psalmist: "Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips." Psalm 141:3
*This passage does not encourage the "name it, claim it" philosophy. It's about godly speech, not procuring wealth.

  1. Well, it's pretty certain that we all need to hunker down and take these words to heart ... out of the heart the mouth speaks, that's for sure. Search me, oh God, and know my heart.

Thanks for this gentle warning ...

I hope your weekend has been peaceful!
