Majorities Are Often Wrong

This 1-minute devotion offers examples of tragic majority opinions and what the Bible says about the majority of One.

Did you know that a majority of doctors once rejected the notion that they should wash their hands between examinations of diseased patients? (source)

Majority opinion can be extremely foolish, stubborn, and dangerous.

But nowhere is majority opinion more tragic than in regard to spiritual truths.

Most of the people in our world are not Christian, and they exercise great influence over public opinion.

The majority of Americans:
1. Believe in evolution.
2. Support abortion for situations besides the life of the mothers.
3. Believe sex outside of marriage is fine.
4. Consider homosexuality an appropriate lifestyle.
5. Believe there are many ways to heaven.

But God rules the universe, and He does not bend to majority opinion. He's the "Majority of One." When we stand with God, we never stand alone. It doesn't matter if a million stand against us.

There will always be fewer Christians than non-Christians, but we must be careful to stay on the "narrow" road of our salvation (Matthew 7:13-14; Jeremiah 6:16). We must be extremely cautious to get our beliefs from the Bible, not culture.

So let's trust the "Majority of One" and ignore any voice that contradicts Him.

-------------------------
Evolution: Only 18% of Americans believe humans were created human. The majority believe in evolution, some claiming we evolved with the help of a "higher power" (source). See Why Evolution Doesn't Cut it With Christians

Abortion: 54% of Americans believe abortion should be legal. 23% of these people believe there should be no restrictions. 31% believe the only restrictions should be on late-term abortions or abortions given to minors without consent. The remaining 45% believe abortion should always be illegal or only legal when the life of the mother is at risk. (source) Note: For over 100 years, abortions have been legal when the life of the mother is at stake, so that's really a non-issue. See Would You Have Justified Slavery?

Sex outside of marriage: Only 14% of Americans believe it's wrong to have sex before marriage. The other 86% have varying beliefs about when it's appropriate. Sadly, only 32% of those who profess to be Christian believe it's wrong to have sex before marriage. (source) The remaining 68% are either young believers who have not fully understood what it means to follow Christ, or they are Christians in name only. See Sex Outside of Marriage: What Scripture Says.

Homosexuality: 72% of Americans consider homosexuality an acceptable lifestyle (source). 67% of Americans support same-sex marriage (source). God's Word makes it very clear that homosexuality is included in a list of serious sins that damage our hearts and souls (1 Corinthians 6:9-11). See Biblical Teaching on Homosexuality.

Many ways to God: 75% of Americans believe they are going to heaven even though many of them belong to false religions or have no religious faith (source). See Eternal Life: Are There Many Ways to Heaven?

  1. Gail, It is amazing where popular opinion takes us sometimes, isn't it? That' why we are supposed to follow just One. I loved this. Kim

  2. Gail,
Thanks for this insightful post. Even if popular opinion at times seems right, we must be cautious and examine all things in the light of scripture. Proverbs 14:12 comes to mind.

I'm enjoying your blog so much.
