God Created Laughter

God created laughter for our benefit, and this short devotion shares 5 reasons it's good for us.

“Joy, humor, and laughter should be part of everyone's spiritual life. They are gifts from God and help us enjoy creation.” ― James Martin

Sometimes we forget that God created laughter.

Think about it. When God was creating mankind, He equipped us to experience a special burst of enjoyment...a way to release stress and relish the unusual, crazy things in life.

But did you know that laughter also has these 4 additional benefits?

It improves:
  • blood flow
  • blood sugar levels
  • immune system response
  • sleep patterns
God tells us in Proverbs 17:22 that "a merry heart does good like a medicine." And He means it!

Laugh, rejoice, sing, and enjoy the God who gave us laughter. Let it sweep through your soul today and improve your overall health.

  1. Laughter is like medicine and it can heal and help keep us well. It is good to laugh at adversity and know that God will work it all out. It is good to read clean jokes and the funny paper. My hubby and I enjoy Mr Pickles and laugh each day at his antics.

  4. Thanks Gail for hosting and having it up so early :-)

I am doing better at laughing...and smiling. Stress to the extreme can make all that hard though I am beginning to really believe that laughter (and Joy) is possible through more difficult times.

  5. Yes, laughter has health benefits. I think God gave us the different generations within in a family to help us laugh. My grandchildren are a source of joy and laughter.

  6. And laughter exercises our LIVER too! Laughter can be very healing. I remember after my dad's memorial service, I sat around with my brothers and sisters and we laughed and told funny stories about our memories of our dad and it was such a blessing to just share those memories together amidst our tears.

    Thanks for hosting today!

  11. A wonderful (now deceased) pastor of ours used to comment on how much he loved a well known portrait of Jesus laughing. His point was that this rare, non-somber picture of Our Lord is a reminder that Jesus delights in us - the same way that we enjoy our own children and grandchildren. I love that image of him!

  14. I'll just have to make a point of laughing more today, Gail! I do feel like it relieves stress--much like crying does too! Hmmm, "funny" how that works! Thanks for this encouraging post and for linking it up at Wedded Wed!

  15. Gail is it biblical to force laughter as an exercise or should laughing come naturally from the joy of the Lord? I'm thinking of "holy laughter" I have been asked to participate in a new "laughter exercise class" that is Christian based however I feel a check in my spirit and unsure if I should participate.

    1. Good question, Inez, and I'm not sure I'm knowledgeable enough to answer, but these are my thoughts: God "distributes [spiritual gifts] to each one, just as he determines." I don't see anything in Scripture that tells us we have to practice or learn these gifts because they are supernaturally given.

In regard to God-given skills (sometimes called "gifts") -- these are not supernatural and we should practice and develop them. This would include things like writing, speaking, organizing, leading, etc.

I've heard of "holy laughter" and I don't doubt that God can fill someone with laughter to comfort or encourage them. But I think this would fall into the supernatural category and needs no practice.

But I don't pretend to be an authority on this subject.
