3 Motivations

Doing the right thing for the wrong reason
  • The man who refuses to have an affair simply because he might get caught does the right thing out of fear of punishment or consequences.
  • The woman who gives generously to charity thinking others will be impressed does the right thing out of self-interest.
  • The person who refuses to sin because they want to please and honor Christ does the right thing out of love.
All three reasons change our appearance and behavior, but only love can change our hearts.*

To be honest, I have done the right thing for all three reasons at one time or another.

But my prayer is to do everything out of love for Christ. What about you?
* This is a thought present in the writings of St. Bernard of Clarivaux, a 12th Century French Monk.

  1. This reminded me of 1 Corinthians 13... "If I have a faith that can move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing."

    Great reminder!

  2. I have always loved the word "philanthropy" because it encourages good with no thought or expectation of glorification. To give without letting anyone know is one of the most satisfying rewards one can be given.

    Be well.
