Are You Among the Wise Men?

There are some unimportant errors in most of our nativity decorations and they don't matter. But other errors do. This 1-minute devotion explains. #Christmas

Scripture never tells us how many wise men visited Jesus.(1)

But it does say they visited a house (Matthew 2:11), not a stable.

Perhaps Jesus was a toddler when they came since Herod killed boys two years old and younger based on the time the wise men first saw the star (Matthew 2:16).

Our traditional nativities and plays aren't quite accurate, but they don't mislead anyone about the true meaning of Christ's birth.

These things are not important because they don't distort the meaning of the gospel. But we should be concerned about false teachings that change the character of Christ, downplay the importance of repentance, redefine salvation, etc.

There are many popular false teachings circulating in our culture and in our churches, and we must know Scripture to refute them.

Falst teachings usually come from two opposite directions:
1. External legalism addressed in Colossians 2:16-17.
2. Permissive, "cheap grace" faith addressed in 2 Timothy 4:3.(2)

That's why 2 Timothy 2:15 says, "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth."

As we celebrate the Word becoming flesh, let's commit to becoming "wise men" who study the Word carefully, and let's base our lives on the accurate principles it contains.

(1) Perhaps there were three wise men. Scripture doesn't tell us. The reason most people assume there were three is because there were three gifts mentioned: gold, frankincense, and myrrh (Matthew 2:11).
(2) Regarding external legalism (food, sabbaths, non-essentials) see Christ's Complete Fulfillment of Old Testament Law.
