How do we respond to extreme faith and radical obedience?
Sometimes
we call someone a Jesus freak because they're weird. But sometimes it's
because they make us feel ashamed by their extravagant love for God.
Did you know that Christians aren't supposed to be balanced?
We sometimes say we need to "balance" grace and truth, justice and mercy, love and obedience. But it's not really an issue of balance.
What we really mean (or should mean) is that we want to discover how our God perfectly blends all of these qualities at the same time. We don't want to stress one aspect of His character at the neglect of another.
No, "balance" is not a desirable Christian quality. We should strive for extreme, revolutionary, world-changing, life-sacrificing, over-the-top love for Jesus.
Paul expresses this beautifully in Philippians 3:7-14.
Being a "Jesus freak" is actually a natural response to God's incredible love!

ReplyDeleteYes, I want to be radically in love with Jesus. I lived in California in the 70's :-) and I remember the 'Jesus Freaks' as young people who really loved Jesus. Sometimes we get a little (or a lot) complacent in our faith as we kind of dry up!!
ReplyDeleteSo very true! When it comes to following Jesus, it's all or nothing. It reminds me of the passage in Revelation 3:15-16 when Christ tells John what to write to the seven churches. To the church Laodicea, he writes...“‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth." Yikes!
ReplyDeleteYikes indeed sister!!!!!
DeleteSold out!! So true!
ReplyDeleteI had one of my online "friends" call me "Freak" which was her shortened version of Jesus Freak. She didn't mean it in a complimentary way though. I found out that she made fun of me quite a bit when I had a daily blog. I guess it made her feel better.
ReplyDeleteThe problem of people who are a "Jesus freak" is that they usually forget the word of Jesus and His teachings.
ReplyDeleteAnd they forget one of the most important virtues: Humility. They end up being quite prideful of their "love" for Jesus.
So they tell everyone how much they love Jesus, how important is to love Jesus... And they usually get quite angry if someone does not pay attention to them or disagree with them.
A truly humble person is more worried about following Jesus word and teachings rather than telling the whole world about their love for Jesus. Or they do in a modest way, not looking for attention.
Loving Jesus means to follow His word through actions.
