Pass-fail grading has its place.
But we rarely do our best when we know we'll get the same grade even if we do only the minimum.
Ironically, I think we Christians sometimes view our spiritual growth as pass-fail. We know we’ll mess up and God will forgive us, so we don't take our Christianity seriously.
We shouldn't compare ourselves with others, but we should test our faithfulness to the opportunities, skills, and purposes God has given us (Romans 12:3; Galatians 6:4).
God is intimately interested in our progress as we learn Scripture and apply it to every area of our lives.
Our assurance of God's love and forgiveness shouldn't make us lazy about our faith. These things should be powerful motivations:
“Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete purity because we fear God.” 2 Corinthians 7:1
Let's take our Christianity seriously because it brings us and our Lord great pleasure.
