Let's Stay Awake

In Romans 13:11 Paul gave a warning that we need to hear today.

Physical sleep is a good thing. It’s part of God’s design to keep us physically healthy and alert (Psalm 127:2).

In contrast, spiritual sleep deeply damages our spiritual health and spiritual awareness.

In Romans 13:11, Paul warns believers to wake up from their slumber because their salvation draws near. If we aren't spiritually awake, we fail to recognize worldly values and cultural propaganda.

There's a similar warning in 1 Corinthians 15:34, and this is also addressed to Christians: “Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God—I say this to your shame.”

Other translations begin this verse with awake to righteousness, wake up from your drunken stupor, and think carefully about what is right

We have fake believers in our churches, but we also have believers who are spiritually asleep. They aren’t living in sin themselves (1 John 3:6). But they're refusing to face the challenges and responsibilities of Christian faith.

They’ve exchanged the strong warnings in God’s Word for “Judge not.” (See The Right and Wrong Way to Quote “Judge Not”.

Dear Christians, let's remember we “are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober” (1 Thessalonians 5:5-6).

And let's encourage our sleeping brothers and sisters to wake up and prepare for the challenges we face.
