A Road Built to Last, the Straightest Road Between Death and Life

In researching ancient Roman roads, I found some incredible similarities between those roads and this popular method of evangelism.

During their height, the Roman Empire built a road system like no other, connecting the ancient world with 248,548 miles of roads (50,000 miles paved with stone).

They built roads in the straightest route possible, which was no easy task.

Many portions of these roads survive today because they were built to last, consisting of five layers: compacted soil, stone blocks, crushed rock, a “concrete” mixture, and six-inch thick rock blocks.

Christians also have a “Romans Road,” bringing people to the Lord on one of the straightest paths possible. This concise way of connecting an unsaved person with the gospel message was built by Paul when he wrote Romans in A.D. 57, and it’s a road we can still travel today.

It’s also five “layers thick”:

1. Romans 3:23 – "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

2. Romans 6:23 – "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

3. Romans 5:8 – "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

4. Romans 10:9 – "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

5. Romans 5:1 – "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."

Sharing Christ involves more than a list of Scriptures, but knowing this list can help us reach that destination.

I didn't write about Halloween this year, but you can read the two-part devotion I wrote several years ago:
