Why Christians Speak in "Spirit-Taught Words"

1 Corinthians 2:10-16 talks about a Spirit-led language only Christians understand. It's not tongues. It's something different. This devotion explains

In some ways, every family has its own “dialect.” This involves ways that we lovingly tease each other or remind each other of both difficult and wonderful situations in our past. Sometimes a word we speak brings with it memories of past history and experiences that only a family member would understand.

This makes me think of 1 Corinthians 2:12-13

“What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.”

I encourage you to read the complete passage (verses 9-16) for a fuller understanding of this wonderful truth. It explains that those of us who are part of the family of God have a unique “dialect.” We speak words that are “discerned only through the Spirit” (verse 14), things we understand because of our common knowledge and experiences as the family of God.

When God rescued us from sin, He gave us “the mind of Christ” (verse 16). That’s why we can understand spiritual things that non-Christians can’t. And it’s what motivates us to share our faith so others can “understand what God has freely given us.”
