Don't Settle for a Bite of Fruit

Just as Eve gave it all up for a bite of the forbidden fruit, many are making similar choices today. This 1-minute devotion explains.

From the beginning of time, selfish desires have led people to lose enormous blessings. Eve had it all—but she gave it up for a selfish bite of fruit. See Eve's Temptation: Insights into Satan's Strategies.

Satan can be very convincing. And he uses the same tactics today, telling us to follow our hearts, make ourselves happy, indulge our selfish desires.

But we Christians understand that this world is not our home. We don’t follow our hearts. We follow the Lord’s heart (Matthew 5:8).

We don’t seek to make ourselves happy. We seek to please the Lord (Romans 12:2; Ephesians 5:10).

We don’t indulge our selfish desires, we deny them (Matthew 16:24).

We understand that we have it all in Jesus, and we aren’t going to give it up for a selfish bite of forbidden fruit!

Let these Scriptures encourage you:

Matthew 16:24-25: "Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.'"

Philippians 3:7-8: "But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ…."

Romans 12:1: "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God--this is your true and proper worship."

Matthew 6:19-21: "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
