In the 11 powerful verses of Psalm 32, the psalmist explains the beauty of repentance.
↪ Who are blessed?
Those who repent (vv. 1-2).
↪ Who feel God’s heavy hand of discipline?
Those who refuse to repent (vv. 3-4).
↪ Want immediate relief?
Repent fully and honestly (v. 5).
↪ Want to avoid ongoing consequences of sin?
Repent quickly! (v. 6)
And now we come to verse 7:
“You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.”(1)
God protects us in many ways, but this passage refers to His protection from the ongoing earthly consequences of sin.
But we choose when to enter that “hiding place” protection.
We can resist like stubborn mules (vv. 8-10) or honestly confess our sins and rejoice in God's forgiveness (v. 11).
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.” 1 John 1:9-10
When we sin, dear Christians, let’s run quickly to our hiding place!

(1) The Hebrew word ron is translated “songs” in most translations, but in the ESV it’s translated “shouts.” The literal meaning of ron is “a ringing cry,” so both translations capture an element of that meaning. Studying more than one translation of Scripture gives us a deeper understanding of the words. What a wonderful picture of the rejoicing that surrounds repentance of sin.
