Paul Despaired of Life
In 2 Corinthians 1:8-11, Paul talks about being under so much stress that he “despaired of life itself.”
Then he explains that this happened so that he would rely on God, not on himself.
I often try to rely on myself. Sometimes even when I’m praying, my mind is planning my "strategy" for dealing with a problem instead of listening for God’s.
It’s comforting to know that Scripture offers advice when we make that mistake:
1. Be honest about your situation (verses 8-9).
2. Realize it is happening for a purpose (verse 9).
3. Remember that you are relying on the God who can raise the dead (verse 9).
4. Remember God’s past faithfulness (verse 10).
5. Set your hope on God's power and purposes (verse 10).
6. Ask others to pray for you (verse 11).
Are you caught in a difficult situation? Rely on God, not on yourself!
