God's Commands Aren't Optional

Why Some Christians are Self-Deceived

“I’ll start giving when my income increases.”

“I’d honor my parents if they weren’t so critical.”

“I’ll study my Bible when life’s not so hectic.”

“I’d forgive them if they didn’t keep doing the same thing over and over.”

“I don’t think God cares if I ignore a few rules at my workplace.”

Sadly, I’ve heard Christians say things like these.

Where do we get the idea that God’s commands are optional, that He doesn’t want us doing hard things or dealing with difficult people and challenging circumstances?

We won’t get any of these ideas from Scripture.

Maybe that’s our problem. Too many Christians are getting their values from culture, not Scripture (James 1:22).*

If we study the lives of Joseph, Jeremiah, Ruth, and Paul we’ll see that God never promises His children ease and comfort.

God tells us to:

1. Give cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:7).

2. Honor parents (Ephesians 6:2).

3. Seek first His kingdom (Matthew 6:33).

4. Repeatedly forgive others (Luke 17:4).

5. Be honest (Proverbs 12:22).

6. Deny ourselves (Matthew 16:24-25).

7. Reject worldly values (1 John 2:15-17).

With His power we can do all of these things! (Philippians 4:13).

  3. Hi Gail. Happy Thursday to you. I am unable to send your post to anyone in my contact list. Do you know what is possibly causing this to happen?

    Blessings,

    1. I'm sorry it's not working for you.

Typically, if you forward the email, it sends normally. Perhaps it's something to do with your email settings?? We are happy to have you forward the emails, so we aren't preventing it.

If I hear of any solutions, I'll let you know.

  4. This quote truly caught my attention: “Maybe that’s our problem. Too many Christians are getting their values from culture, not Scripture (James 1:22).” I would not be surprised if culture is up in the top five negative influences for Christians.
