Are You Uncomfortable with Mystery?

I used to wish I could fully understand God. I was uncomfortable with mystery. Then someone told me something that totally changed my point of view. This 1-minute devotion explains.

It would be nice to have an answer to every question about God and life, but it’s not possible.

Romans 11:33 says: “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!

God is infinitely complex—beyond our understanding:

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:9

I used to be uncomfortable with this mystery. I wanted all the answers. Then I realized that no human being would ever fully understand so great a God. If we could understand all things, we'd be God's equal.

God assures us we have every answer we need to live a godly life (2 Peter 1:3), and we have His Word to guide us (Psalm 119:105).

But we aren't capable of understanding everything here on earth:

“For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.1 Corinthians 13:12

That's one of my favorite verses. It reminds me that God sees the big picture and we see only a tiny part. And it explains that any confusion we have here on earth will disappear when we see Christ face-to-face.

  1. I *am* uncomfortable with mysteries! I want to know. NOW! But you make a good point... if I understood everything that I wanted to understand, that would make me think I was God's equal. It takes humility, trust, and faith to let God work in His time.
