4 Obstacles to Discipleship

Studies show that these 4 obstacles are stunting our Christian growth. This devotion offers some helpful answers.

According to extensive Barna studies, self-identified evangelical Christians face four major obstacles to spiritual growth/discipleship.

1. Commitment
Only 18% admit they’re committed to their spiritual growth.

2. Repentance
Few admit to being deeply sorry for their sins.

3. Activity
Most confuse church activity with spiritual depth.

4. Spiritual community
Few are involved in relationships that hold them accountable.

Why not take some time to evaluate yourself in these four areas.

If we want to genuinely live for Christ, we need to be:

1. Determined and deliberate about becoming more like Christ
    Philippians 2:12-13
2. Aware of how our sins separate us from God’s purposes.
    1 John 1:8-10
3. Concerned with maturing in our faith, not just participating in church programs.
    2 Peter 1:5-8
4. Investing in the lives of others who will also invest in our lives.
    Ephesians 4

Please join me in praying through these obstacles and taking steps to overcome them.

  2. I thought as I grew older it all would get easier but it hasn't. There is still work to do :)

  3. #4 is actually the reason my husband and I renewed our vows. Is there anyway we can make sure every Christian in America reads this and takes it to heart Gail? :-)

  5. Actually the entire post is great and like Deborah above said #4 is key I believe. No man is an island, at every step of the way we need someone to walk beside us. Is not the reason for the Holy Spirit. Shalom in the truest sense of the word.Timely very timely, thank you.
