When we ride public transportation in Budapest (where we used to live), bus drivers don't check tickets, so some people try to ride free, hoping they won't get caught.
However, transportation officials randomly board buses in plain clothes. Then, after the doors are closed they put on arm bands and start checking tickets.
One minute illegal passengers are calm and happy. The next they are anxious, moving slowly to the back of the bus hoping to get off at the next stop before the inspectors reach them.
What a great illustration of Romans 3:20: "For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are."
God's law is like the officials who board the bus. They can't sell tickets. All they can do is fine illegal passengers.
But the neat thing is this: Christians are like the legal passengers on the bus. However, we didn't buy our tickets. Christ purchased ours for us.
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:23
