How God Views Our Requests

"Ask and you will be given" is a verse easily misunderstood. This 1-minute devotion explains.

It would be easy to misunderstand Matthew 7:7-8: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

At first it might seem that God was saying we could have whatever we want, wealth, health, or anything else.

But then it contains three important follow-up verses.
“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! (verses 9-11)

If a son asks for bread or fish to eat, a good father would never give him a rock or a snake. Neither would he give him spoiled food, marijuana, or poison. Nor would our heavenly Father give us something unhealthy, addictive, or dangerous.

If we ask for selfish, harmful, or ungodly things, or things that are not part of God’s purposes for us, God will not give what we ask.

But one request He will always fulfill is our desire to know Him better (Jeremiah 29:13; James 4:8).

What are you asking of God?
