Firm Foundation or "Inflatable Mattress"

When my husband and I found ourselves without a mattress, it reminded me of these spiritual truths.

During our recent move, a series of extenuating circumstances caused my husband and me to sleep on an inflatable mattress for almost a month.
During that month, we gradually developed sore backs and achy joints.

It made me realize how quickly we can get out of shape by resting on something inferior. And I couldn't help but apply this to our faith. If we rest on the inflated promises of our world instead of the firm foundation of God's Word, our souls will begin to ache.

However, when we are resting in Christ, we have the perseverance to throw aside our sinful desires (Matthew 11:28-29Hebrews 12:1-2). And we have the strength to stand firm when sharing God's truth with a lost, confused world (1 Corinthians 16:13-14).

When my husband and I were able to again sleep on a firm mattress, we quickly noticed the overall improvement in our physical well-being. Resting on God's truth causes this same improvement in our spiritual well-being.

So let's avoid the aches and pains of compromise by resisting the devil's inflated lies (Ephesians 6:10-18). And let's live in the strength and wholeness that only our God can give (2 Peter 1:3).

I appreciate how God teaches us spiritual truths through various events in our lives. When I broke my ankle in Budapest, I wrote this devotion: Spiritual and Physical Atrophy

When my husband and I found ourselves without a mattress, it reminded me of these spiritual truths.
