Why Are Some Christians Afraid of Romans One?

It's troubling to discover how many Bible-believing pastors are softening God's warnings in Scripture. This devotion explains.

Romans 1:18-32
defines cultures which wickedly suppress God's truth, becoming dark and evil.

It's not addressing self-righteous Christians or Christians who fall into sin and repent. It's not even discussing the unbelievers from forty years ago who generally agreed with Christians about sexual perversion.

It's addressing the dark progression of sin by unbelievers who mock not only God's commands but also His character and His creation design, promoting and taking pride in things that damage people's hearts and souls.

This last year, I decided to listen to online expository sermons on Romans 1:18-32 from Bible-believing churches, and I’ve been deeply troubled by what I've heard.

Even though this passage clearly speaks of those who've defiantly rejected God's truth, most pastors claim Christians shouldn't feel they're any better than those mentioned. In addition, most pastors downplay the serious nature of homosexuality even though it's offered as an example of sinful, shameful, degrading, unnatural behavior.

This type of preaching is one reason many Christians are ashamed or silent about sexual perversion.

We need to remember how Paul introduced this strong warning:

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes ... For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: 'The righteous will live by faith.'” Romans 1:16-17

It's shameful for us to ignore or sugarcoat God's warnings.

I've shared my concerns about a specific sermon on Romans 1:18-32 in Have You Noticed that Certain Sins Are Pampered in the Church? Pastors can be very creative in avoiding the true message of Romans 1.

These are important truths in understanding Romans 1:
