What do you do at Christmas to focus on the Lord?
My mother started a wonderful tradition for our family. Each Christmas evening, she called us to the table for a birthday cake for Jesus.
There was a single candle at the center of the cake representing the light of Christ (John 8:12; John 12:46). And each of us was given a small candle to light from that candle (Matthew 5:16). One by one we shared a sentence or two about our love for the Lord and placed our candle on His cake (1 John 4:19). When done, we blew out the candles together and sang Happy Birthday to our Savior (Luke 2:13-14).
I’ve followed my mother’s example and tried to include Christian aspects in all my holiday celebrations, sometimes creating new traditions for our family.
God gave the Israelites feasts and festivals to celebrate all He had done in their lives (Leviticus 23:1-2). He wants us to celebrate and enjoy our faith too (Philippians 4:4).
Sadly, many wonderful Christian holidays have been overshadowed by commercialization and secular themes. But we can focus on the true meaning by creating special family traditions.
We have an incredible miracle to celebrate at Christmas "for to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will
be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty
God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9:6
