Cultural Conformity

Will you get pressured into giving in or taking a stand for the Lord? The pressures can be very strong when they come from friends or family.

When culture accepts moral values that oppose the Bible, Christians face increasing pressure to conform. The pressure is especially strong when a close friend or family member chooses an ungodly lifestyle.

If you haven’t had a loved one “come out,” or become a wilderness wanderer, or choose a sexually immoral lifestyle, you’re in the minority.

Because we have God's Spirit, Christians are able to care deeply for people who reject our values, but most people who reject Christian values also reject Christians. That puts increased pressure on us to conform in order to please our loved ones.

But true believers must stand firm, remembering that it isn't loving to approve of lifestyles that damage people's souls (1 Corinthians 6:9-20). Popularity with friends and family must always take a back seat to sharing God's truths accurately and honestly (1 Thessalonians 2:3-4).

Throughout history, God’s people have been pressured to conform to culture, and sometimes the pressures are extremely strong because they come from loved ones.

We need to remember what it means to be Christ's servant:

"Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ." Galatians 1:10
