About 15 years ago, I bought strawberries at a fruit market in a foreign country. I looked for the stand with the most beautiful berries and asked for a kilo.
When I got home, I discovered the berries were moldy and mashed, not the beautiful berries I'd seen on display. Some of the locals later told me to beware of dishonest vendors who scoop from a barrel below the stand.
Even though I got my full kilo of berries, it made me think of Proverbs 11:1: "The Lord detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him."
Honesty is important to the Lord.
And it matters to the Lord whether it's a kilo of berries or a million dollar purchase:
“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” Luke 16:10
As Christians we must be careful to do what is honest in every area of life.
Notice how often God stresses honest business practices:
Deuteronomy 25:13-16: "Do not have two differing weights in your bag—one heavy, one light. Do not have two differing measures in your house—one large, one small. You must have accurate and honest weights and measures, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. For the LORD your God detests anyone who does these things, anyone who deals dishonestly."
Leviticus 19:36: "Your scales and weights must be accurate. Your containers for measuring dry materials or liquids must be accurate. I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt."
Proverbs 16:11: "Honest scales and balances belong to the LORD; all the weights in the bag are of his making."
Proverbs 20:10: "Differing weights and differing measures-- the LORD detests them both."
Proverbs 20:23: "The LORD detests differing weights, and dishonest scales do not please him."
