God announced Christ's birth with magnificent demonstrations: “An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified” (Luke 2:9).
He also announced His birth with humble details: “a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger” (Luke 2:12).
What a magnificent thing we celebrate at Christmas: the humble earthly birth of our glorious Savior who existed before time…God becoming man to save us from eternal destruction (John 3:16).
We are made in God’s image, but we are not God’s peers.
I once heard Christ becoming a man compared to you or me becoming a dog to save dogs.
Obviously, that’s not a perfect analogy, but it should give us pause.
Christ “who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” Philippians 2:6-7
So much of Christianity today is about us—our self-image, our worth, our feelings. We must never forget how great a sacrifice Christ made. We must remember who God is and the extent He went to save us.
May this day of Christ’s birth give us serious pause…followed by serious praise.
For those of us who have passed from death to life, from Old Covenant to New Covenant, there is nothing more important to celebrate than Christ’s birth and Christ’s resurrection.
