In Genesis 6, everyone on earth became so evil that “everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil” (verse 5).
Wow!
“So the LORD was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart. And the LORD said, 'I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth.'” (verses 6-7)
Did God change His mind?
No.
This passage simply expresses God’s great sorrow. Scripture speaks to us in ways that we can understand with our limited, earthly perspective.(1)
God knew the events of Genesis 6 when it was still Genesis 1.
He carried out His plan to destroy the wicked, cleansing the earth of evil. But He started fresh with the godly Noah.
This historic event teaches us that God is incredibly patient, but He has limits (Romans 2:4-5).
What else does it teach us (Romans 15:4)? Today's Bite Size Bible Study offers some additional thoughts.

Thank you for setting me straight on this verse. For years I've misunderstood it. I thought God had changed His mind; such a relief to know I had read it wrong !
