Most of us have work, ministry, and family responsibilities that keep us busy.
And no matter our personality type, we can get burned out if we aren’t careful.
Jesus and His disciples had demanding schedules with constant interruptions. Hundreds of people were seeking their help.
At one point Jesus sent out the twelve disciples, telling them to “proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons” (Matthew 10:5-8).
What a daunting task!
When they finished their journeys, Jesus said something we all need to hear:
“Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Mark 6:31
Jesus knew they needed to spend time with Him away from their many distractions.(1)
He alone could give them rest from their burdens, listening to their victories, defeats, testimonies, and questions.(2)
This was essential for their spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being. And it's essential for ours as well.
Make sure today that you go with Him "to a quiet place and get some rest."
--------------------
(1) In this particular case, the crowds were so persistent that they only had a small amount of "quiet time" with the Lord while they were in the boat. They could have kept doing ministry without this break, but Christ knew they needed time with Him. We should never use a busy schedule as a reason to skip our time with the Lord. It is also interesting to note that Christ was concerned that they hadn't had time to eat. Christ cares about our physical needs as well as our spiritual and emotional needs. See Eat, Rest, Cry for more insights on this subject.
(2) Christ gives us rest from our cares and worries (Matthew 11:28). His Word teaches, rebukes, corrects, and trains us (2 Timothy 3:16-17). He comforts us (2 Corinthians 1:3-4), and gives us peace in the midst of our difficulties (John 14:27; John 16:33).
