The theme for the book of Proverbs is found in 9:10:
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."
Holy fear is best described as "reverence," but it's a powerful type of reverence. (See "No Fear, No Faith.")
It's not "God is a good God."
It's "Wow! God is glorious, able to create and destroy with a breath, Creator and Judge of all, all powerful, all knowing, all wise. He defines and personifies love and truth."
Fearing God is the beginning (not the end) of wisdom. Those who genuinely fear the Lord are daily students of His Word, waiting daily at His door (Proverbs 8:34). (See "Fearing the Lord Keeps Us in the Race.")
A person can have academic degrees and awards and still be little more than a fool if they don't fear God.
Those who fear God trust Him even when things go wrong, seek Him when making decisions, and acknowledge that He is the ultimate source of truth.
Do you fear Him?
