Don't Do These 3 Things When Someone is Suffering!

How can we represent Jesus to those who are suffering? This 1-minute devotion offers some dos and don'ts. #BibleLoveNotes

We are broken people living in a broken world experiencing pain, suffering, and challenges.

When we are suffering, we can remember that Scripture tells us to "fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:16-18).

In this life we experience sorrow, but we will be free of all sadness in heaven (John 16:33).

But how do we help others who are suffering? Sometimes we avoid people who is suffering because we don't know what to say or do.

Let me offer some suggestions from my personal experiences:

1. Unless you've been in the same position, never say "I understand what you're going through." Because you don't.

2. Don't recite Romans 8:28 unless they bring it up. It can sound like you are underestimating their pain when it's quoted at the wrong time.

3. Don't tell them they're responsible for their suffering unless their problems are directly and completely caused by rebellion against God's commands (See "Job's Friends" and "No Karma").

I've done some of these things early in my walk with the Lord, but my own suffering has taught me how hurtful they can be.

Instead, let's listen to those who are suffering and let them know we care (Romans 12:15; Galatians 6:2). When appropriate, let's help them with their physical needs.

But the most important way we can show our love to those who are suffering is by praying for them (1 Timothy 2:1).

  1. I don't want to be an 'Eliphaz' kind of friend. This is so encouraging as I have a friend who is going through very rough times.

  2. When friends tell me of their situations and ask me to pray for them, I do. And I ask our omniscient God to show me a scripture or passage to share with them. I tell them I asked God what to share specifically with them, and that it's not me just tossing Bible verses at them saying 'everything will be OK'."
