We are created in God's image, but sin has "deformed" our minds (Genesis 3).
We're selfish, fearful, proud, and easily deceived by our ungodly desires. When caught, we're more likely to blame-shift than repent. We have trouble grasping God's ways (Isaiah 55:9).
That's why we need to transform our minds. Only then will we understand God's good, pleasing, and perfect will (Romans 12:1-2).
As Scripture explains, we must "throw off" our sinful desires and let the Spirit renew (transform) our thoughts and attitudes so we can "put on" our new nature - a new mindset that is righteous and willing to do God's will (Ephesians 4:22-24).
"Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him." Colossians 3:10
And that's the key: the better we know our God, the more we become like Him.
