Jesus Freaks, Extreme Faith, and Radical Obedience

God, Christian Love for God, Extreme love for Jesus
How do we respond to extreme faith and radical obedience?

Jesus Freak: Anyone who loves Jesus more than me.
Sometimes we call someone a Jesus freak because they're weird. But sometimes it's because they make us feel ashamed by their extravagant faith.

Did you know Christians aren't supposed to be balanced?

We incorrectly say we need to "balance" grace and truth, justice and mercy, love and obedience. But these aren't really issues of balance.

What we really mean (or should mean) is that we want to discover God's perfect character because He perfectly exhibits all of these qualities at the same moment. And we don't want to stress one aspect of His character at the neglect of another.

But "balance" is not a desirable Christian quality. We should strive for extreme, revolutionary, world-changing, life-sacrificing, over-the-top love, obedience, and service to Jesus.

In Luke 14:33, Jesus says: "Those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples."

Sounds like Jesus wants us all to be Jesus Freaks.

  1. Yes, I want to be radically in love with Jesus. I lived in California in the 70's :-) and I remember the 'Jesus Freaks' as young people who really loved Jesus. Sometimes we get a little (or a lot) complacent in our faith as we kind of dry up!!

  2. So very true! When it comes to following Jesus, it's all or nothing. It reminds me of the passage in Revelation 3:15-16 when Christ tells John what to write to the seven churches. To the church Laodicea, he writes...“‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth." Yikes!

  3. I had one of my online "friends" call me "Freak" which was her shortened version of Jesus Freak. She didn't mean it in a complimentary way though. I found out that she made fun of me quite a bit when I had a daily blog. I guess it made her feel better.
