People-Pleasing Is a Dead End

Colossians 3:23 gives us the truth we need to overcome destructive forms of "people-pleasing." This 1-minute devotion explains.

When we talk about "people-pleasers" we often think of weak, doormat types. But people-pleasing is a subtle problem for most of us.

When I say people-pleasing, I'm not talking about being kind and gracious to others. That's a good thing.

I'm talking about feeling insecure if others don't approve of us, especially in regard to our faith in Christ.

Sometimes people unsubscribe from Bible Love Notes because they don't like something I've written. I could avoid this if I only wrote things people wanted to hear. But God's Word gives us a full picture of truth, not just the easy parts. And if it's in God's Word, that means you and I need it. We need to be challenged and corrected as well as encouraged and comforted.

In our present culture, many Christian beliefs are unpopular. It can make us feel insecure if we don't focus on our Savior. But when we put His desires at the top of our list, we can rest secure in His love no matter what others say or do.

I'm learning to deal with my insecurities by reminding myself of Colossians 3:23-24: "Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ."

I encourage you to memorize Colossians 3:23 and recite it to yourself whenever you are tempted to please man instead of God!

  1. I'm not unsubscribing. I look forward to these every day! Over and over, Proverbs reminds us that fools reject correction but the wise embrace it and therefore become more wise. I want... NEED... all the wisdom that I can get!

  2. Thank you so much for this verse, and for the thoughts! I never considered insecurity as being a sign of people-pleasing, but I just meditated 2 min about what or when I'm insecure and yes, i'm insecure when I'm trying to please people, not God!

Also, don't feel discouraged when people unsubscribe, you are doing a great job for the Lord and I'm sure a lot of people are blessed because of you!... I'll be praying for you!

    God bless you!

  3. Discouragement is awful. for every person that may disagree with you, I'm sure there are at least ten who have been ENcouraged by you. Not anywhere close to unsubscribing over here. It's not always about us, or what we want, but what God wants, and some people may just have a hard time accepting that we're not perfect and often WE need to change.

  4. My pastor referred to Colossians 3:23 in his mid-week sermon on Wednesday evening, and he said, "Pretend Jesus is your boss." I found that very convicting! Now, here I see the verse again. Obviously, God is trying to get my attention.
