Beware of the Cardboard Gospel
“I love your commands more than gold, even the finest gold … Your instructions are more valuable to me than millions in gold and silver.” Psalm 119:127 & 72
What an accurate way to describe God’s Word! It's not like other books. It is "fully trustworthy" (Psalm 119:138)!
Without God’s Word we would be spiritual paupers, poverty-stricken, indigent, living in spiritual cardboard boxes.
So why is the “cardboard gospel” so attractive to people?
What do I mean by the cardboard gospel?
I mean the corrugated half-truths packaged by "progressive Christians," delivered to churches around the world and unpacked by popular authors and teachers.
It breaks my heart that these modern teachers believe they understand the gospel better than the human Bible authors who walked and talked with Jesus and received God's Word by divine inspiration (2 Timothy 3:16-17; Hebrews 4:12).
The cardboard gospel creates a Jesus who is more acceptable to our culture. He doesn't give commands, just suggestions written in pencil. And he hands out erasers in case his suggestions offend the culture.
The cardboard gospel can’t save anyone, but it’s gaining converts.
Dear Christians, let's pray against this devaluing of God's priceless Word.
--------------
The "cardboard gospel" has been a problem since the beginning of Christianity:
Belief in "another Jesus": 2 Corinthians 11:4
Thinking sin doesn't matter: Romans 6:1-2
Distorting the gospel: Acts 20:30
People putting themselves on the level of the Apostles: 2 Corinthians 11:12-15
