Why Did You Get Married?

Why did you get married? If you're like most people, this short devotion can encourage you to change your perspective.

Why do most people get married?

Most of us get married because we think our spouse will make us happy.

And why do most people get divorced?

Because their spouse didn't make them happy.

What if we took the focus off our happiness and focused on our spouse's happiness?

"Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too." Philippians 2:3-4

What if we accepted the difficulties in our marriage as character-building, faith-building experiences?

"We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love." Romans 5:3-5

After 50 years of marriage, I'm so glad that I weathered the storms. I can say that my marriage has made me truly happy!

  2. Focusing more your spouse than yourself is so very hard to do sometimes. Most people are overly concerned with self. It is so very rewarding though when I am able to help my husband though, especially when he is stressed. Great post. I visited from the Mommy Moments hop.

  5. That is wonderful advise. I totally agree with you 100%. It is not easy to put someone elses needs ahead of our own that often, but in marriage it makes a world of difference.

  8. I married...because this man prayed for me to be his wife for 3 1/2 years. God finally did a miracle in my heart. I completely believe..."She who finds a husband finds a good thing!" ...even though I know the scripture says the opposite.

  10. I agree 100%. Only you can control your emotions and attitude. There are plenty of people with a lot more pain and suffering than I will ever know. However, it is easier said than done. Thanks for sharing at Mom's Library!
