Even though Scripture commands us to expose false teachings (1 John 4:1; 2 John 1:7-11; 1 Timothy 6:3-5), many Christians are hesitant to look objectively at popular “Christian” books and entertainment. In fact, some Christians get angry when biblical errors are addressed in something they enjoy.
I've heard these excuses:
1. “It’s only a book/movie/mini-series. We should allow for some artistic license.”
If artistic license changes or contradicts Scripture, it should concern us, especially because it's unnecessary.
2. “It's changing lives and sharing the gospel, so we shouldn't criticize it.”
When something has great influence, we should be more concerned about its biblical accuracy, not less. We want people saved by the true gospel, not a modified version.
3. “It's not Scripture, so we shouldn't expect it to be completely accurate.”
One purpose of Scripture is to judge anything that isn't Scripture.
4. “It's not put out by a ministry, so it doesn’t have to be accurate.”
We're commanded to test the accuracy of anything and anyone claiming to present God's truth (1 John 4:1). If we're not willing to address small errors, we won't be willing or able to address large ones (Matthew 25:14-30).
Dear remnant Christians, we're living in a time of great deception (2 Timothy 4:3-4). We must guard our hearts (Proverbs 4:23). Don't let the popularity of a book or movie influence your desire for the accurate presentation of God's Word.

Note about artistic license: When an author is presenting unknown details in a Bible story, he should take great care to ensure that those details don't contradict the written Word of God. If an author writes dialogue for God, it should line up with God's words and His character as presented in Scripture.
