The Fourth Oldest Sin: It's Your Fault

The fourth human sin recorded in Scripture was blame-shifting (Genesis 3).(1) 

We don’t find a single word of repentance in Adam and Eve’s explanations of the fall. Instead of confessing and asking God’s forgiveness, Adam and Eve excused their sins by blaming someone else.

Adam blamed Eve and indirectly blamed God for giving him Eve:

“The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

Eve blamed the serpent:

“The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Ever since that fateful day, human beings have become experts at blame-shifting. 

But we can't blame Satan (James 4:7).

We can't blame parents (Ezekiel 18:20).

And we can't blame circumstances (Philippians 4:12-13; 1 Corinthians 10:13). 

Whenever we start to blame anyone or anything for our sins, we need to read James 1:12-15, especially verses 14-15:

"Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions."
