Our Jealous God

It's an important concept that we should understand correctly: our God is a Jealous God. this 1-minute devotion explains. #BibleLoveNotes #Bible

I remember the first time I heard that God is a jealous God. I didn't  know what it meant.

“Be careful not to forget the covenant of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden. For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.Deuteronomy 4:23-24

I'd always thought of jealousy as something bad. But understanding how and why God is jealous is an important Biblical principle.

There is an appropriate type of jealousy. For example, a loving husband is jealous for his wife's affection unwilling to share her with other men.

And God is jealous for our affection unwilling to share us with other gods. Just as affairs are destructive to a marriage, our flirtations with other gods (things we treasure or prioritize above God) are destructive to our relationship with the Lord.

Human jealously can be contaminated by pride or envy. But God's jealousy is purely inspired by love for us.

He's perfect, awesome, and never wrong, worthy of all praise, glory, and honor...the perfect Father, Shepherd, Creator, Counselor, Helper, etc.

We owe Him our ultimate love, faith, and devotion. And the more we trust Him, the more we are blessed by His love, wisdom, and respect.

To have such a wonderful God jealous for our affections is something that should leave us speechless!

  5. Jealousy is often confused with envy. My understanding is that jealousy comes into play when something/someone is rightfully mine and is being taken/stolen (even if it's the affections of a spouse) by another who has no rights to it/him/her. God's name is Jealous: EX 34:14 "For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:" God is good hence jealousy is good because God does not sin. Envy, on the other hand, is when someone covets/steals/'desires' something or someone that does not belong to them and has no rights to. We were bought with a price (1 Cor. 6:20), the precious blood of our Lord Jesus. Therefore, we are His...He owns us. We are His bondservants (Gal. 1:10). He is our King. We must differentiate between jealousy and envy. Essentially, jealousy good, envy bad. :)
