Does God want us happy?
The answer is “yes” if happiness is based on being joyful, at peace, and content. Joy and peace are fruits of the Spirit, and “godliness with contentment is great gain” (Galatians 5:22; 1 Timothy 6:6).
However, Jesus doesn't guarantee the type of happiness that's based on worldly pleasures.
Jesus said, “In me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
As we anticipate eternal happiness, we make holiness our goal:
“Let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.” 2 Corinthians 7:1
“Just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'” 1 Peter 1:15-16
“For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.”
1 Thessalonians 4:7
God loves us and has special purposes for our lives (Ephesians 2:10). We find our happiness in Him as we seek holiness.
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12:1
