Because we're made in the image of the God who is the creator of the universe, creativity is part of our "spiritual DNA." And I also happen to love re-purposing things I find, especially when they are ready to be discarded. And here's a good example: I bought this old Castilian Spanish Dictionary for about $1.50 at a flea market in Budapest.

It was falling apart. And the pages were yellowed.

It's easy to find old dictionaries at flea markets and garage sales because most people now look up words online.

Old dictionaries so often have lovely illustrations.

I decided it would make wonderful bookmarks!

So I cut the pages close to the binding.

Using my paper cutter, I cut off frayed edges...

I made sure each bookmark had at least one interesting illustration.

Then I folded the page along the middle line of each page.

And evened up the sides on the paper cutter.

You can make these without a laminator by using clear contact paper or laminate sheets that don't require a machine.

But I used a laminator.

The nice thing about these bookmarks is that
they look interesting on both sides.

I cut the laminate about 1/8 inch from
the edges of the dictionary pages.

I like the vintage look of these bookmarks,
but you can also use new dictionary pages.

I'm wondering how to use the rest of the book.  Any ideas?

  9. There are tons of ideas on Pinterest about upcycling old books. I made a Harry Potter wreath at Christmas, used old sheet music to make Moravian stars, and folded some origami things out of book pages.

I need to get around to googling ideas for the covers. I've found a few, but this cover was in such bad shape it wouldn't work. Thanks for stopping by.

  15. Pinning! My daughter will especially enjoy this project, though we'll be using the contact paper method.
You could use the rest of the pages to cover picture frames or boxes using mod podge.

  16. What a great use for those pages! I've seen lots of cute wreaths using old book pages. Or, you could just wrap some jute around what's left of the dictionary and set it up in a vignette. I would love for you to link this up to our All Things Thursday Blog Hop! I hope to see you there!
