"Does God want me to take this job or does He want me to go back to school?"
"Should I buy a new car or save for upcoming expenses?"
"Should I take my children out of public school and put them in Christian school?"
Sometimes we're confused about God's will. We want to obey but we're not sure which choice is best. We know we can't depend on worldly wisdom or popular cultural choices:
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:2
Let me offer three important considerations:
1. Have confidence that God will guide you (James 1:5-7).
He wants us to make the right choice.
2. Eliminate any plans that violate scriptural principles (2 Timothy 3:16-17; Genesis 4:7).
This is a non-negotiable. God won't bless anything morally or ethically wrong.
3. Look for the right thing, not necessarily the "easy" thing.
If God calls us to a specific path, He'll handle the difficulties. We can remember Christ's words in Matthew 16:24 whenever we want to take the easy path:
"Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me."
God has plans and purposes especially designed for you and me:
"For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10
So let's do our best to seek His good, pleasing and perfect will for our lives.

I think many times we dismiss the still small voice that calls us to do things. We are looking for the large loud voice so that we know we are not mistaken or misunderstanding the call. Thanks for putting these verses together and I think the principle that "does it violate scriptural principles" sums it up.
ReplyDeleteAmen. I am guilty of this.
DeleteGood point, Carol. I think you're right--we sometimes are looking for dramatic guidance when we simply need to move forward in what we already know to be His will.
ReplyDeleteI like your point that if God calls you to do something, He'll handle the difficulties.
