Slightly Skewed
“Architects know that if building plans are off ever so slightly, it skews the entire design. Such is also true in handling the Word of God. It is vital that we seek to read, understand, interpret, and apply it correctly. Lives are at stake if we don’t.” Eric J. Bargerhuff(1)
We Christians have lots of popular beliefs, some of which are slightly skewed.
Usually our errors are based on verses taken out of the context of the Bible as a whole.(2) Or they’re simply popular worldly philosophies repackaged with Christian words. Even when the errors are small, they keep us from accurately understanding the gospel, and this can have serious consequences.
That’s why Colossians 2:8 warns us:
“Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.”
Like the Bereans in Acts 17:11 we should examine everything, even popular Christian sayings, in light of the whole counsel of Scripture (Acts 20:27).

It is so important to examine things in light of the whole of the Bible. I was just looking for the verses about the Bereans yesterday. I couldn't find it because I couldn't spell it correctly. I couldn't think where it was in the Bible either (terribly poor memory). I love the way the Bereans searched scripture daily. They had such intensity for learning how to live a godly life.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's so important to have a right view of God. When we do, we get to know Him, and when we get to know Him we can't help loving Him more. And when we love Him more we desire to serve Him.
ReplyDeleteLove all your posts! You have a wonderful ministry here. : )
Thanks, Cathy.
