Are You "Resolute" About Your Faith in the Coming Year?

This 1-minute devotion explains that Philippians 2:12-13 is a perfect reason to make New Year's Resolutions.

Resolute means being “admirably purposeful, determined, and unwavering.”

Making New Year’s resolutions is an ancient tradition, not specifically Christian. But Philippians 2:12-13 is a perfect verse for being resolute about our faith, a passage that should encourage us to assess our spiritual growth and take steps to improve it.

“Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”

“Fear and trembling” means we have such a strong sense of who God is that we feel wholeheartedly compelled to believe and obey His commands. It means we understand that the more fully we give ourselves to God’s purposes, the more we will be transformed and renewed (Romans 12:1-2).

We Christians hate the word “works,” because we know works don’t save us. But we sometimes forget that “we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).

With this in mind, take time today to commit yourself to specific things that will make the coming year a time of faithful growth in the Lord.
