In a culture that has grown increasingly self-centered, we can shine the light of Christ (Matthew 5:16) by following the simple but profound advice of James 1:19:
If we end a conversation and realize we’ve done all the talking, we’re not shining.
Unselfish people listen and ask questions. They know if those around them are suffering or rejoicing. They're interested in other people's lives, sensitive to their views, and aware of their needs.
Philippians 2:3-4 is another good passage for evaluating our conversations:
"Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too."
Let's ask God to help us become good listeners!

(1) When we're more interested in others than in ourselves, we'll also be "slow to get angry" (James 1:19). See Scriptures and Resources for Conquering Anger.
