Avoiding a "Half-Empty" Faith – Philippians 4:4-8

Are you an optimist or pessimist? A secular study confirms what Scripture teaches about attitudes.

Do you think the glass is half empty or half full?

I admit I can look at things pessimistically at times, and it's not a godly quality. It’s also not a healthy quality.

After 15 years of carefully studying 678 women who had similar beliefs and life goals, a university scientist concluded that those who expressed positive emotions were less likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those who expressed negative emotions. (Source: Time Magazine)

Pessimism isn’t healthy for our minds. But joy is!

In Philippians 4:4-8, Paul explains the importance of a joyful, hopeful attitude:

"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Life involves difficulties and suffering (John 16:33), but we can guard our hearts and minds by focusing on our Lord and giving Him our anxious thoughts in prayer.
