How the Flu Changed my Perspective on Christmas

When I ended up sick before the holidays, I learned something important. This 1-minute devotion explains. Be encouraged!! #Christmas #BibleLoveNotes #Bible

I had my plans: get all my Christmas projects started the first week in December while my husband visited his parents.

Then I got the flu.

Instead of wearing my shopping shoes, I wore pajamas for a week.

The tree stood undecorated, my holiday sewing and decorating projects sat in idle stacks. When I felt like eating, I barely had energy to prepare my own food, let alone bake and freeze for the holidays like I'd planned.

It hit me where I lived: What is Christmas really about?

Is it dependent on getting all these projects done? Or is it a time to slow down and reflect, a time to do those things that are meaningful to me and my family without getting stressed?

Having the flu that holiday season taught me to seek the first things first and not let my "projects" get in the way:

"Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Matthew 6:33

Every holiday season, it's important to ask ourselves about our priorities? What are we seeking first and foremost? Who are we celebrating?

  2. I needed this today--hubby is sick and I am fretting over his misery and wondering if everyone else will start dropping like flies, all while I bleach everything in sight. Thank you for your wise words. Hope you get to feeling better very soon!

  3. Thank you Gail! It makes me feel better, see I don't care for the tree, or the gifts...much, or the dinner even! (Which makes me feel less feminine sometimes, like less in touch with the world!) But we plan on sending that evening worshiping, singing, reading the Word and maybe having a nice dinner (if someone invites us last minute) I wish we do out of love for God, I think we do out of laziness to be honest.

  7. This happened to me last year...I was devastated but it made me think about it all. This year I did a better job with Christmas and I wasn't sick. I am so sorry it happened to you! Thanks for your wisdom. Happy New Year!

  8. This is so true. We can forget what Christmas is all about just by all the things we 'think' we need to do. We simplified some this year and still found Christmas a very special time with our family.

Thanks so much for linking this up at WholeHearted Home.
