Dementia Patient Forgets Everything Except This: Hebrews 13:5

This is an inspiring story of God's love and faithfulness even when dealing with dementia.

Gail shares this sweet devotion on YouTube HERE.

My friend Nati, our translator for the Serbian Bible Love Notes, recently sent me a video of an 88-year-old woman with dementia (video).

This woman couldn't remember her children or what she had for lunch, but when she was asked who Jesus is, she said “Well, Jesus is the one who saved me and lives in my heart and will take me home. I love Him.”

My husband's grandmother got dementia and couldn't recognize her loved ones, but she would sit down at the piano in her nursing home and play hymns. What's amazing is that none of her family even knew she could play the piano.

If you research this phenomenon, you'll find lots of stories of dementia patients responding to hymns and Scripture verses when they can't respond to other stimulation. See Music Appreciation.

Our faith isn't dependent on our health or memory because God has promised His children, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). That's a comfort for us at every age and every stage of life.

Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  ~ Romans 8:38-39

  1. My last visit with my grandma was singing "Oh when the Saints" - She had been curled up in a fetal position before I started to sing to her then she joined in. For just a moment she was lucid then she stated that's enough and was gone again.
