Adam: the Author of Modern Psychology

The first man introduced the basic premise of modern psychology. This 1-minute devotion explains.

We're born with a fallen human nature inclined to make sinful choices (Romans 5:12; Romans 5:18-19). We need to transform our minds in Christ (Romans 12:2). See Transformation, Not Information.

In contrast, most modern counseling is based on the assumption that we're born good but circumstances and/or other people mess us up.(1)

Adam was the author of this lie. He blamed his sin on Eve and on God for giving him Eve (Genesis 3:11-12). See The Fourth Oldest Sin.

His son Cain took it up a notch by wallowing in self-pity after the premeditated, cold-blooded murder of his brother (Genesis 4:13). I'm sure Cain would have given modern counselors an ear-full about how God damaged his self-image by not appreciating his farming skills (Genesis 4:3-7).  See Things that Make Me Sad.

Then there's Joseph who had legitimate reasons to complain about his circumstances, but he chose to let God be God (Genesis 50:15-19). He didn't deny his mistreatment, but he moved past it. See Bad Blood.

This is how he explained it to his wicked brothers: "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives" (Genesis 50:20). See Genesis 50/20 Eyesight.

We can hold the view of Adam, Cain, and modern psychology. Or we can hold the biblical view of Joseph and move forward into God's plans and purposes (Philippians 3:13-14).

Which choice will you make?

💙Beyond 1-minute for those who want more....

(1) Not all psychologists hold this view, but many of the beliefs of secular psychology are in conflict with biblical principles.

Sadly, some of these errors have crept into "Christian" teachings. For example, the popular Boundaries teachings claim: “You do not act in inappropriate ways for no reason. You are often trying to meet some underlying need that your family of origin did not meet.” (source)

The Bible says our fallen human nature is the reason we sin (Matthew 15:17-18; Ephesians 4:22-24; James 1:14-15). We can claim we act in inappropriate ways” because our family of origin” somehow failed us, but we won't find support for that belief in Scripture.
