Sure-Fire Way to Identify a False Teaching

Modern False Teachers makes a claim that tells us up front they are lying. This devotion explains.

A sure-fire way to identify a false teaching: It makes claims that are contrary to hundreds of years of Bible scholarship.

It’s certainly possible for one era in history to get something slightly wrong. And it’s normal to have some debate about things that don't affect the major teachings of the gospel (non-essential doctrines).

But if someone teaches you something contrary to major tenets of traditional Bible teachings, recognize it as false teaching

Think about it: To believe such claims means God allowed the majority of His people to believe major lies for centuries.

Whoever teaches such things believes they are more in tune with God than millions of dedicated, Jesus-loving Bible scholars, missionaries, martyrs, and faithful Christ-followers for thousands of years!

God is an excellent communicator.

He designed our brains and He speaks to us in ways we can understand, through His Spirit and His Word. (See the Bible passages below the devotion.)

We can be assured that He would never, never, never allow the majority of His people to be confused about a major element of the gospel for thousands or even hundreds of years.

He loves us too much!

Modern False Teachers makes a claim that tells us up front they are lying. This devotion explains.
Note: This is especially important because many false teachers are denying major tenets of the gospel like the deity of Christ, hell, immoral lifestyles, the fulfillment of Old Testament law, the inerrancy of Scripture, and biblical submission. See also how cult leaders do the same thing: When Angels Tell Lies.

To believe that God let the majority of Bible-believing Christians believe the wrong thing for thousands of years, we must delete these passages from our Bibles:

Proverbs 28:5:  "Evildoers do not understand what is right, but those who seek the LORD understand it fully."

John 14:26: "The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."

John 16:13: "When he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come."

Hebrews 4:12: "The word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

2 Timothy 3:16-17: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

  1. This is so true today it seems more than before, the way some church's change to suit the popular culture of climate. There is also the multitude of tele evangelists who always are not on point. In this present time we all need to pray and read the bible , to find the truth.

    1. Thanks for sharing your experiences, Christine. Yes, I think we are finding more and more false teachings in churches. I'm glad you were able to recognize those teachings and leave that particular church. Thanks also for your encouragement for me. God bless you!
