A Cheerful Heart Is Good Medicine

Science Confirms Proverbs 17:22. This 1-minute devotion explains this joyful news.

Sometimes when I've been having a difficult day, a complete stranger can improve my mood with a cheerful smile and a friendly hello. The same thing happens when I hear a small child's laughter.

Even when we're dealing with difficulties, “A cheerful heart is good medicine” (Proverbs 17:22).

According to research, laughter improves blood flow, blood sugar levels, immune system response, and sleep patterns.

“We change physiologically when we laugh. We stretch muscles throughout our face and body, our pulse and blood pressure go up, and we breathe faster, sending more oxygen to our tissues.… It can be like a mild workout—and may offer some of the same advantages" (WebMD).

Everything that God says is true, and science proves it.

Sometimes Christians are stereotyped as sour-faced and stern, but I know that's not true. Every day I see Christians break that stereotype with their friendly smiles, warm hugs, and contagious laughter. We know without a doubt that these things are medicine for our souls.

So let me ask you this: who can you cheer up today with a friendly smile and a cheerful greeting? Ask the Lord to direct you.

    1. I understand your sorrow over the state of our world, but our joy is in Christ who is the same yesterday, today and forever! And our joy is in our salvation, knowing we will one day be in heaven where all things will be perfect.
